The senior IFS officers often represent India in its embassies, high commissions, and consulates in foreign countries. At times this may also be at the permanent missions like multilateral organizations like the United Nations Organization (UNO).

As an IFS officer, you will be expected to safeguard India’s concerns and interests in the country you will be posted once you become an IFS officer.

The main job you as an IFS officer will be to develop a cordial relationship of India with the country you will be posted at. Apart from this, you will be expected to keep close track of the latest developments that are taking place in the country you will be deputed to. The same has to be reported rightly, based on which India’s policies will be designed. So, it is indeed a vital job without any doubt.

Once you are posted as an IFS officer in a foreign country, you should be able to successfully negotiate matters with the concerned authorities in the country and try to ensure that India’s interests are being upheld.

Training is provided to the candidates who qualify.

Once selected in the IFS cadre, you will be provided with training in India’s training academy in Mussoorie. The training usually ranges from about three to four months and covers a vast range of topics to ensure your overall development in the field. After this, you will be sent to the Foreign Service Institute in the capital, where you will have to undergo focused training to familiarize the candidates with different wings of the government. After completing this training, you will receive on-the-job training. It will be attached to the division of the ministry of external affairs. It will be for about six months.

Finally, you will be posted at an Indian embassy or an Indian consulate in a foreign country after completion.
