Indian Forest Service Exam- a Brief Description

Indian Forest Service Exam, which generally goes by the name IFS exam, is one of the three-armed UPSC examinations, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS). Like other civil service examinations, the IFS exam is also conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, UPSC. The UPSC commission conducts the IFS examination every year and recruits eligible and qualified candidates for the scientific management of Indian forests. The UPSC IFS exam and post belong to the apex of All Indian Services.

Once you pass the IFS exam and become an IFS officer, you can easily practice all administrative, judicial, and financial powers inside your domain. As an IFS officer, you also get the responsibility of holding all positions in the state forest department. 


 

Eligibility Criteria

To be able to participate in the Indian Forest Service (IFoS) exam 2022, all candidates must fulfil a few eligibility criteria. Let's have a look at them.

Nationality:

·         The candidate has to be a citizen of India, or

·         The subject of Bhutan, or

·         The subject of Nepal, or

·         A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Uganda,East African countries like Kenya, Burma,Zambia, the United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam intends to live in India for a lifetime

·         The candidate can also be a Tibetan refugee who visited India prior to 1st January 1962 to eternally live in India, or

·         Candidates belonging to categories b, c, d, and e should produce a certificate of eligibility, as issued by the Government.

Physical Attributes:

According to the administration of the Indian Forest Service examination, all candidates appearing for the exam must be physically fit. Therefore, to appear for a UPSC IFS exam, you must fulfill the physical ability criteria mentioned below.

·         Length:

o   General category: At least 163centimeters (for male candidates) and at least 150 centimeters (for female candidates)

o   OBC, SC/ST category: At least 158centimeters (for male candidates) and at least 145 centimeters (for female candidates)

·         Chest: At least 84 centimeters (for male candidates) and 79 centimeters (for female candidates)

·         Eyesight: The candidates must have good eyesight, at least from 6/6 to 6/9. Weak eyesight from 6/12 to 6/9 is also accepted.

·         Blood pressure: Age 22- 34- 122- 127

Please note that women should not be pregnant during the medical test.

Educational Qualification:

All candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in at least one of the subjects mentioned below.

·         Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science

·         Physics

·         Chemistry

·         Botany

·         Geology

·         Mathematics

·         Statistics

·         Zoology

·         Agriculture

·         Forestry

·         Engineering

Age limits:

All candidates must be over 21 years old and under 30 years old as of 1st August on the year of the examination.

Additionally, some special cases also include:

·         Relaxation of 5 years for SC/ ST candidates

·         Relaxation of 3 years for OBC candidates

·         Relaxation of 5 years for the candidates from the states of Jammu and Kashmir

·         Relaxation of 5 years for defense service personnel

·         Relaxation of 5 years for Ex-servicemen, that comprises Commissioned officers and ECOs/SSCOs to have served at least 5 years of Military Service and have been released

·         Relaxation of 5 years for ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of 5 years of Military Service

·         Relaxation of 10 years for blind Deep muted, and orthopedically handicapped people

IFS exam pattern

The UPSC IFS Exam contains three stages.

1.       IFS Preliminary examination

2.       IFS Main examination

3.       IFS interview round

The preliminary examination contains two objective-type papers of 200 marks each. To appear for the IFS main examination, students must pass the prelims exam. In the Main exam, candidates have to answer a total of 1400 marks answers. The question paper will be set in English only. Qualified students with a sufficient number must appear for the next round, interview, or personality test to finalise the job post.
