Tips to Crack the IAS Interview

The UPSC Interview is the third and final stage of the civil services exam. This test is not about your knowledge that they already tested in the prelims and the mains. This is to test your inner personality. The UPSC interview lasts about 30 minutes, and the IAS interview questions asked carry 275 marks out of a total of 2025 marks.

This half an hour can completely change your life by fulfilling your dream of becoming a civil servant. A high score in the interview section can round off to a huge benefit for the candidates, and it increases their overall rank as well.

What is the true nature of this IAS interview?

The ultimate objective of conducting this interview and asking the IAS interview questions of the candidate is to determine how suitable the candidate is in their administrative skills. The panel members are not present there to test the candidate’s knowledge; they are there to assess the candidate’s personality for civil service.

They evoke different characteristics of the candidate by asking them counter-questions and using hypothetical case studies. After clearing the mains, the first and foremost question that comes to every candidate’s mind is why everyone feels uneasy about preparing for the IAS interview questions.

1. Firstly, because there is no defined syllabus for the interview just like there is for the prelims and the mains,

2. And secondly, all the interview panel members are drawn from different academic disciplines. Therefore, they probe questions from their respective domains that sometimes become difficult to answer.

IAS Interview: Key Points

Candidates who are going for the IAS interview should always keep in mind the below points to easily understand and answer the IAS interview questions asked by the interview panel:

● It is not mandatory to answer all the questions asked of you.

● Your answers to the IAS interview questions should reflect your clarity of crisp and clear thoughts and decision-making approach.

● When you are answering any question, make sure you make appropriate eye contact with the interview panel member.

● The candidate should also take a stand for themselves at some point in time just to hear the board also.

● Do not make unnecessary hand and body movements. Your body posture and movement should be relaxed and attentive.

● While answering the IAS interview questions, use a couple of words from the question itself to prove that you have been listening carefully to the questions.

● It will be your attitude and not your aptitude that will determine your success in this IAS interview.

● Do not start judging your performance in the interview. If by chance you make a mistake in between, do not just react. The government needs sensitive, warm, attentive, and respectful youngsters.

● Say less to convey more.

● Just keep in mind that nobody is perfect, so just answer the IAS interview questions with complete moral integrity.

● Do not respond to questions about which you are unsure.

● Give balanced answers to the IAS interview questions with an optimistic approach.

● Before going for the actual interview, prepare for some mock interviews as well.

● Keep yourself updated on current affairs.

● Prepare questions related to your decision to choose the UPSC exam.

● Just be yourself and be confident too.

Conclusion

While appearing for the UPSC interview, just be prepared that the interviewer will ask strange and uneasy IAS interview questions, but you should not lose your calm while answering and stay calm. So always be prepared for the same, and for that, you should watch video lectures and mock interviews.
