Understanding Indian Foreign Service

Indian Foreign Service falls under the diplomatic section of services. It is garnered as a Group A service whose candidates are chosen by the UPSC exam. The IFS officers need to clear the UPSC exam, where they need to secure a certain cut-off rank. Successful candidates get positions as IFS officers nationwide. It is a challenging role which comes with several privileges and power. Therefore, every year lakhs of aspirants appear for this exam. The main work of an IFS officer is to build policies and schemes for the nation's foreign affairs. They are also responsible for managing Indian missions abroad. 


 

One of the best things about Indian Foreign Services is that the officers get to travel globally. Their work includes long trips to foreign countries. Moreover, they also get to work with the President's Secretariat, PMO and Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. They are also responsible for the Regional Passport Offices of the nation. Most of them get key positions in different ministries on deputation.

IFS exam

UPSC, which stands for Union Public Service Commission, executes and manages the IFS exam. The exam is conducted in three different stages. The first is the Prelims, the second is Mains, and the last is the Interview or personality test.

Last year, the exam was taken on 5th June 2022, while the Mains exam was conducted from 16th to 25th September for 9 days in different states. The selected students become eligible for the interview conducted after the results. For 2023, the first phase of the exam will be conducted on 28th May 2023. The forms will come on the website on 1st February 2023. The Mains exam, the second phase, has a cut-off parameter for clarifying the exam. The student's total score is predicted after calculating the Mains and Interview scores together.

The eligibility criteria for the Indian Foreign Service exam are similar to the other domains of the UPSC. The minimum educational requirement is graduation for the aspirants willing to appear in the exam. The IFS exam is similar to the IAS, IPS and IRS subjects. The Union Public Service Commission provides the exam pattern. It is given by CSE examination.
