It is a three-stage process that includes a preliminary exam, a mains exam, and an interview. The CSE is one of the toughest exams in the country, and only a few candidates clear it.

The preliminary exam consists of two objective-type papers: General Studies and Aptitude Test. Once the training is complete, IFS officers are posted to Indian embassies and consulates abroad.
