UPSC full form is Union Public Service Commission which conducts the IAS exam. It is one of the most reputed and challenging exams in our nation. So if you are planning to participate in the exam, you must wonder what the right time for preparation is. At which stage should you start, and how much time should you give? There must be several other doubts in your mind, too, as there is a lot of misconception among the aspirants. But worry not; today, we will discuss the required time to the right time for the preparation. Let's go!

What is the required time for preparation?

If you want a convenient and strategically planned journey for your preparation, 2 years will be good. You can get good guidance and suitable preparation methods during this period. Now, when you start preparing, you will also be like the other candidates after two years. On average, around 50K aspirants seriously prepare for the exams. The total number is much more significant, around 3 to 4 lacs. But most of them either don't appear or prepare well. However, only 800 to 1000 positions are vacant for the actual role.

As you may already know, the exam happens in three levels: first is Prelims, second is Mains, and the last one is the interview round. Out of the total aspirants, only 10 to 15K get selected in the first Prelims round. So you get a very tough competition, and you must prepare well to overcome all this competition.

When you start preparing, your first year will be devoted to understanding the concepts and building a solid foundation. You will only be gathering information from different sources. You can finish the syllabus efficiently as you will have no pressure till then.

You can take small steps to prepare thoroughly for the exam throughout these two years. The very first is reading the newspaper daily. As an IAS aspirant, you are expected to know what is going on in the country and globally. So start reading a newspaper and make small notes from it. You should also read the editorial magazines to form opinions and get different perspectives.

But then, you will need to be more aware of your preparation from the second year. You should start practicing for the written exams, including answer writing and interview preparation.

The ideal age for starting your preparation

This is a very subjective opinion about when you should start your preparation. The best time can be during or after your graduation. So probably you can start your preparation at the age of 18 years. After that, you don't need to study radically. Instead, start with baby steps like enhancing your GK, language understanding, numbers, basic maths, etc.

Conclusion

UPSC requires a lot of preparation and hard work to complete. Therefore, even the time to start the preparation matters a lot. The best time can be considered around 18 years of age. However, it is very subjective. Therefore, around 2 years should be given to your preparation if you want to start early.
