What are the 5 compulsory subjects in UPSC?

 The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is a constitutional body in India responsible for recruiting candidates for various civil services positions in the Indian government. Every year, the UPSC conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE), which is one of the most prestigious and competitive exams in India. The CSE is a three-stage examination that comprises of the Preliminary, Mains, and Interview stages. The Mains examination consists of a written test, which includes nine papers, out of which seven are compulsory and two are optional.   1. Essay: The essay paper is one of the most important papers in the UPSC Mains examination.   2. General Studies Paper-I: The General Studies Paper-I is one of the seven compulsory papers in the UPSC Mains examination. This paper covers a wide range of topics related to Indian heritage and culture, history, geography, polity, and governance. The paper consists of 20 questions, each carrying 10 marks. The candidates are expected to answer all the questions in about three hours. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the candidate's understanding of the Indian society and its diverse cultural, historical, and geographical aspects.

  3. General Studies Paper-II: The General Studies Paper-II, also known as the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), is another compulsory paper in the UPSC Mains examination. This paper is designed to test the candidate's analytical and reasoning abilities, comprehension, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. The paper consists of 80 questions, each carrying 2.5 marks, and the candidates are given two hours to answer the questions. The topics covered in this paper include logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude, reading comprehension, and decision-making. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the candidate's overall aptitude and suitability for a career in the civil services.

  4. General Studies Paper-III: The General Studies Paper-III is another compulsory paper in the UPSC Mains examination. This paper covers topics related to the Indian economy, technology, biodiversity, environment, and security. The paper consists of 20 questions, each carrying 10 marks. The candidates are expected to answer all the questions in about three hours. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the candidate's understanding of the various economic, technological, and environmental issues facing India and the world.

  5. General Studies Paper-IV: The General Studies Paper-IV is the last compulsory paper in the UPSC Mains examination. This paper covers topics related to ethics, integrity, and aptitude. The paper consists of 20 questions, each carrying 10 marks, and the candidates are given three hours to answer the questions. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the candidate's understanding of ethical and moral concepts, their ability to apply ethical principles in real-life situations, and their overall attitude and approach towards the civil services.
