What are the language papers in the UPSC syllabus?

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is responsible for conducting various competitive examinations in India, including the Civil Services Examination. The syllabus for the UPSC Civil Services Examination includes a wide range of subjects, including language papers. However, please note that the syllabus may undergo changes over time. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the language papers in the UPSC syllabus are as follows:

1.Paper A: One of the Indian Languages (Qualifying)

Candidates are required to choose one Indian language from the list of languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The purpose of this paper is to test the candidate's ability to read, write, and understand the chosen language.

2.Paper B: English (Qualifying)

This paper tests the candidates' English language skills, including comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and expression.

It is important to note that the marks obtained in the language papers (Paper A and Paper B) are not counted for ranking. However, candidates are required to score a minimum qualifying mark in these papers to ensure eligibility for the next stages of the examination.

The language papers aim to test the candidates' language proficiency, which is crucial for effective communication and administration in the Indian civil services. The purpose is to ensure that candidates have a good command of both English and an Indian language, as they will be required to interact with people from diverse linguistic backgrounds during their administrative career.

Please keep in mind that there may have been updates or changes to the UPSC syllabus after September 2021. It is always advisable to refer to the official UPSC website or the latest notifications for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding the syllabus.
