How Does the UPSC Determine the Number of Candidates to Select?

 


The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India follows a specific process to determine the number of candidates to select for various civil services examinations. The selection process involves multiple stages, and the number of candidates selected at each stage is based on the vacancies available, the performance of candidates, and other relevant factors. 1.Vacancy Calculation: The first step involves estimating the number of vacancies in different civil services for which the examination is being conducted. Vacancies are determined based on the requirements of various government departments and services.

2.Reservation Policy: The UPSC follows the government's reservation policy, which includes reservation for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and economically weaker sections (EWS). The number of candidates selected in each category is determined accordingly.

3.Preliminary Examination: The civil services examination conducted by the UPSC consists of a preliminary examination, a main examination, and an interview. The preliminary examination is an objective type test, and candidates who qualify this stage are shortlisted for the main examination. The number of candidates selected for the mains is generally around 10 to 12 times the total number of vacancies.

4.Main Examination: The main examination is a subjective test, and candidates are evaluated based on their performance in this stage. The number of candidates selected for the interview is approximately three times the total number of vacancies.

5.Interview: The final stage is the interview or personality test. The number of candidates selected for the interview is based on the performance in the main examination.

6.Final Selection: The final selection is made based on the cumulative performance of candidates in the main examination and interview. The number of candidates selected for appointment is determined according to the total number of vacancies.

7.Waitlist: In addition to the candidates selected for appointment, the UPSC may also maintain a waitlist. If selected candidates do not join or fulfill the eligibility criteria, candidates from the waitlist may be considered for appointment.

It's important to note that the exact methodology may vary for different examinations conducted by the UPSC, and the commission may make adjustments based on changing circumstances and requirements. The UPSC strives to maintain transparency and fairness in its selection process.
